Which witch movies are you watching? Halloween night is one of my most favourite nights of the year! The magick and spiritual energy is off the scale. If you want to make the most of this electrifying night, what better way than to get the gang together (whether that’s your family or your friends or your fury loved ones), get comfortable, get the halloween candy ready, sit back and enjoy the show!

1. THE WITCH (2016)

The Witch is a folk-horror film set in New England during the 1630s. Its plot follows a Puritan family is banished from a Puritan settlement over a religious dispute encounter forces of evil in the woods just beyond their farm. This movie is considered by some to be one of the best horror films of the 2010’s!

2. THE CRAFT (1996)

Four outcast teenage girls at a Los Angeles parochial high school delve into the world of witchcraft for personal gain, when the girls start worshiping a powerful earth deity they call “Manon”. All the girls have troubled backgrounds which is what brings them together. This, combined with their developing powers leads to very dangerous consequences for these young, aspiring witches.

3. AN AMERICAN HAUNTING (2005)

This is a movie based on true events. In Tennessee during the 1800s this was the only documented case in US history, and validated by the State of Tennessee, in which a spirit caused a person’s death. Between the years 1818-1820, the Bell family of Red River were visited by an unknown presence that haunted the family, and eventually caused the death of one of the family members. Super scary stuff!

4. THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (1999)

A cult classic, this is a movie of a found video that shows footage of three young film students who have traveled to a small town to collect documentary footage about the Blair Witch (the Blair Witch is a legendary local child murderer). Over several days, the students interview people in the local town and start to gather clues to support the story’s accuracy. However, the project takes a frightening turn when the students lose their way in the woods and to see and hear horrific noises …

5. THE COVENANT (2006)

Four best friends who are young warlocks of the same coven all share a secret. Out of nowhere they suddenly have to protect themselves from a stranger who happens to be another warlock. This warlock is hellbent on destroying their coven after 300 years of hate … Everything begins to unravel after a student is found dead after a party, revealing secrets which threaten to shatter a pact that has protected the boys’ families for centuries.

6. BLACK SUNDAY (1960)

While being burnt at the stake by her brother, the witch Asa Vajda vows to enact revenge on her descendants. Hundreds of years later Asa returns to life and immediately raises her henchmen from the dead and ready to keep her promise! This is an Italian gothic horror film which was banned for several years in the United Kingdom. This film is now considered to be a pioneering work that set the standards for Italian horror films! Thanks to its juxtaposition of beautiful and horrific elements and strong depictions of eroticism and graphic violence. Not one for the kids.

7. THE WITCHES (1990)

The Witches, is a dark, fantasy comedy horror movie based off Roald Dahl’s story. A group of evil witches are going about their business masquerading as plain, ordinary women as they turn little children into mice! A young boy and his grandma take it upon themselves to find a way to prevent the witches from being successful, but can they succeed? One of the earliest witch movies I ever watched as a young child myself and I absolutely love it!

8. HAXAN (1922)

Haxan is Swedish a fictionalized documentary depicting the evolution of witchcraft. It is a silent horror movie which consists partly of documentary-style storytelling accompanied by dramatized narrative sequences. The movie claims to show the historical roots and superstitions surrounding witchcraft beginning in the Middle Ages all the way through to the 20th century and is partly based on the study of the Malleus Maleficarum. Häxan proposes that such witch hunts may have stemmed from misunderstandings of mental or neurological disorders, triggering mass hysteria …

9. SUSPIRIA (2018)

Suspiria is a witchy movie about a young American dancer Susie Bannion who goes to Berlin in the ’70’s to audition for the world-renowned Helena Markos Dance Co. When she rises to the top and gets the role of lead dancer, the dancer she replaces breaks down and accuses the company’s female directors of witchcraft. An inquisitive psychotherapist and a member of the troupe, uncover dark and sinister secrets as they begin to probe around the depths of the studio’s hidden underground chambers. Suspiria is a psychedelic trip into an occult world of fear, blood and horror. Are you ready to watch?

10. ROSEMARY’S BABY (1968)

Rosemary’s Baby, is a horror movie considered a prominent feature film within the horror genre. It very much focuses on the occult and witchcraft, emphasizing psychological tension to give you give you the scares. Rosemary, a young wife comes to believe that her unborn baby is not of this world. Rosemary and her husband move to a New York City apartment building which has an ominous reputation accompanied by very odd neighbors (Roman and Minnie). When Rosemary becomes pregnant she becomes increasingly isolated which is not good … the diabolical truth is only revealed after Rosemary gives birth. So, if you start this movie you must watch it all the way till the end, can you do it?

Gretel & Hansel 2020 dark fantasy horror movie based on the German folklore tale “Hansel and Gretel” by the Brothers Grimm. When their mother descends into madness, Hansel and Gretel must fend for themselves as they get left in the dark and unforgiving woods. Hungry and scared, they eventually stumble across a load of food outside an isolated house. The seemingly friendly owner invites Hansel & Gretel inside but the children soon suspect that her generosity and mysterious behaviour maybe part of a more sinister plan …

Eve’s bayou is a witchy themed movie based in Louisiana over the course of a long, hot summer.An American Southern Gothic drama type film about a 10-year-old little black girl called Eve Batiste who discovers that her family’s affluent existence is just a facade. The doctor father, Louis creates a rift within the family, throwing Eve’s mother, Roz and teenage sister, Cisely into emotional turmoil. Eve, finds some solace with her fortunetelling psychic aunt, Mozelle who is a Hoodoo Practitioner called the Black Widow. Eve, who also has the spiritual gift of sight, has a premonitory dream shortly before an accident occurs …

Scarlet’s witch is a witchy movie about a young girl who is pushed out and rejected by her peers. To escape, she finds solace and refuge in the forest where she can escape from her loneliness. In the forest she meets a mysterious witch who offers here magick … Scarlet refuses the offer at first, all the while still visiting and maintaining their friendship well into her college years. When her new relationship with a handsome guy at school is threatened by another girl, Scarlet turns to her old friend the witch and she decides to take on the magick to get what she wants. But, do her newfound powers fulfill all her desires or do they destroy everything she has known and loved … why don’t you find out!?
