WHY IS IT CALLED THE BEAVER MOON?

The full Moon names come from a number of places which include the Native American, Colonial American and multiple European sources. Each full Moon name was applied to the entire lunar month not just to the full moon specific day/night of the full Moon.

Did you know that the month of November was originally called “Novem” and was the 9th month in the old Roman calendar. November was also the start of the new year for the Celtic traditions. The Celtic year ended on Samhain and they called the month of November a “Moon-month” – a month full of beginnings and endings.

NOTE: Now is a good time to start abandoning negative thoughts and bad habits as you embrace the new season while breaking free from any hindrances that maybe holding you back.

The Beaver Moon month of November gets its name from the busy hustlers we love and know as beavers. These hard little workers begin to take shelter during this time, in their lodges they have made for themselves and their families. They go into them after gathering up enough stores of food to see them through cold, dark winter months ahead.

NOTE: Did you know beavers stay active all winter long?

You can channel the beaver in you by harnessing the ability to be the architect and creator of your life. Take this moment to use the Beaver Moon as a last motivating push before winter arrives. It a time to create the transformation you want to see in your life. You can figure out what “dams” you need to create to stop negative energy from draining and influencing your physical and spiritual well-being so you can move forward in creating your desired environment.

NOTE: Back when there used to be a fur trade in North America, November was the season when hunters would hunt beavers for their thick pelts which are oily, waterproof and highly valued during winter months.

THE MONTH OF HECATE

Goddess Hecate has many celebrations throughout the year especially in the month of November. In this month, we celebrate the Night of Hecate (November 16th) and the Day of Hecate of the Crossroads (November 30th). Hecate represents the ancient Crone or Dark Moon aspect of the Triple Goddess form (Diana/Artemis, represent the Cresent Moon and Selene, represents the Full Moon aspects). As those who know and follow Hecate, She is known to rule the passages of transformation and life. Hecate rules over all our varying passages of life and can change forms as well as ages but, Her most familiar form is considered to be the third aspect of the Moon, the Crone (the carrier of wisdom). She still is a huntress goddess who navigates the spiritual realms. She has all the secret powers of nature at Her command.

NOTE: Other names for Hecate are: Distant One, Lovely One, Queen of the World of Spirits and Goddess of Witchcraft.

Hecate is associated with the following: the Dark Moon, prophecies, visions, magick, wisdom, healing, charms, spells, dark magick, averting evil, victory, riches, purification, transformation, choices, renewal and regeneration. Ask for Her guidance and assistance in achieving what is necessary in your life path.

To enhance your magickal connection with the Beaver Moon of November, here are some suggestions of ways in which you may achieve this. You can wear or, decorate your altar/sacred space using the colors sea-green and various shades of gray. In your spell work or magick add a lapis lazuli, topaz and hyacinth. You can even just add these to your altar or add to your outfit as a piece of jewelry for the day and/or night.

Incorporate the flowers chrysanthemum and cacti that are in bloom to your decor or magick (maybe even add them to a ritual bath or tea). The best scents to use during this time are cherry blossom, peppermint, lemon, hyacinth and cedar (in perfume, essential oils or scent candles/incense). Aldar and Cyress trees are associated with the month of the Beaver Moon. If you are wanting to connect with deities or nature spirits you should focus on making connections with the subterranean faeries or the following deities: Hecate, Kali, Bast, Isis, Osiris, Nicnevin, Saravati, Lakshmi, Skadi and Mawu.

If you wish to incorporate birds and animals, the owls, sparrow and goose are good options. The unicorn, crocodile and scorpion are great animal correspondents for this moon month too. Adding figurines, pictures of representations to your altar are all good ways for you to do this. Corresponding herbs for the month of the Beaver Moon are: blessed thistle, betony, grains of paradise, verbena, and borage. Incorporate these herbs into your magickal workings under the Beaver Moon.

When working your magick, focus on staying grounded and prepared. Reach out to the goddesses or gods or spirits who you feel are closest to you. This power flow is all about preparation, transformation and communication. Strengthen yourself in all these areas by meditating, spell working and ritual practices.

INTERESTING FACT: The Moon in English, Italian, French, Latin & Greek is feminine. In Sanskrit and all the Teutonic languages the Moon is considered masculine.

WHAT MAGICKAL PRACTICES CAN YOU FOCUS ON DURING THE BEAVER FULL MOON?

Witchcraft … witch + craft. The definition of craft is “an activity involving skill in making things by hand“. So with this in mind, why not take this full Moon as an opportunity to craft some magick into something like a pomander ball? They are so easy to make and very fun to do! All you need to do is grab the following items and follow the step-by-steps below:

What you need: Some firm oranges, limes or lemons (your choice or use all three!), a darning needle, whole cloves. Powdered equal amounts of: Allspice, cinnamon, nutmeg, rosemary, cloves and orris root powder, netting, and ribbon.

STEP 1: Make sure the fruits you choose are firm and blemish free

STEP 2: Warm the fruit to room temperature

STEP 3: Take the darning needle and pierce the skin then insert the whole cloves in rows that touch each other like you can see in the picture below

STEP 4: When the fruit is totally covered, put in a dry place to dry out

STEP 5: Blend together the allspice, cinnamon, nutmeg, rosemary, cloves and orris root powder and roll the fruit in the powder until it is well covered and leave it in the powder for 2 weeks to dry out further.

STEP 6: Wrap your fruiting in some fancy (or not) netting and tie with some ribbon of your choice to hang!

So what is a pomander ball I hear some of you ask? A pomander ball is simply a piece of fruit (traditionally an orange) that has been pierced and inserted with cloves then left to dry. They give of a wonderful aroma. You can use your pomander balls anywhere you like such as drawers and closets. You can also use them as decorations by hanging them from a mantel or tree or on your altar. Maybe you just want to add them as a center piece to your dining table in an attractive bowl, it’s entirely up to you! Also, they will continue to give off their scent for many years to come.

NOTE: When making your pomander ball focus your intentions and incorporate your magick as you are making your pomander balls, infuse the energy of the Beaver Moon and place them in your scared space or on your altar.

Beaver Moon Magick Hands Picture

Another great activity you can do on your own, with your family or as a group of friends is to make a magick hand picture. You can make it for yourself or you can frame it and give it away as a gift. Whatever you decide to do it for, here’s how to get started …

What you need: Piece of paper (any size you want as long as you can fit your hands on it), pencil, white felt, gold felt, blue felt, glue.

STEP 1: On the paper trace the outline of your hand with your finger spread wide with your pencil.

STEP 2: Lay the outlines on the white felt and cut them out.

STEP 3: Cut a 3″ diameter circle from the white felt

STEP 4: Cut 2x wings from the gold felt for each side of the white circle

STEP 5: Arrange all your pieces on to the square of blue felt and glue into place

NOTE: This would be good to use as a focal point at the beginning of mediation, placed nicely in your sacred space.

Simple things you can do at the Beaver Moon and every Full Moon:

  • Chanting: will increase your cognitive functioning & will help you with calmness and joy
  • Meditating: very beneficial during a full moon
  • Fasting: an empty or light stomach will help you go deeper into your meditations and spell work

  • De-cluttering: having a clean physical space will benefit your spiritual place & help energy flow
  • Smudging: Cleanse your home and yourself with your favorite incenses and herbs (I love sage!)
  • Crystal cleansing: The full Moon is a great time to clear your crystals energy & recharge with the Moon’s positive energy alongside your intentions.
  • Moon bathing: Soak up the calm and cooling energy of the Moon & feel “at one” with the Universe.

A Ritual To Do During the Beaver Moon

Most of us spend some considerable time in the kitchen, after all, we all have to eat! This is done day in and day out, and we should take some time to really appreciate and honor all the work that goes into preparing and cooking a meal for yourself and for your family.

The festival of the Kitchen is a ritual you can do this time every year. Do this to honor your house. Cook a special meal, and make sure you take care of all the cleaning afterwards.

NOTE: The Chinese keep plaques in the kitchen that honor the kitchen God/Goddess, maybe you might like to do the same? Make your own if you’re feeling crafty or you can buy one. Maybe you already have a kitchen witch on her broom, hung up in the kitchen to bless it?

Give your kitchen and all your appliances a good clean to honor your space and the spirits who reside there to help you. You could also spruce it up with a new lick of paint or a new decor to brighten things up. This will keep you and all the supernatural entities that come through or reside with you, happy.

DEMON TRAP TO KEEP YOUR HOME HAPPY

If you struggle to keep out negative or demonic entities from your home you can create a simple trap that will trap them before they can get in and cause any disruptions.

What you need: a white piece of paper, a pen

STEP 1: Write the following words on the paper in a spiral format, starting from the outer edge going into the center of the paper

All you spirits of disruption and disharmony, into this trap are you drawn, From the center you can only return to your original domain

STEP 2: Place the paper flat under the door mat or rug by your front door.

This is a very ancient practice (a device used by the people of Mesopotamia). If anyone enters your home with these type of entities and creatures attached to them, the demons will be trapped at the door and will not have a chance to enter into your home to cause havoc with your harmony.

WHY DOES THE FULL MOON HAVE SUCH A STRONG EFFECT ON ME?

As a Witch, we understand that the full Moon holds a stronger pull over the waters of this Earth. Not only the oceans, rivers and lakes but also the waters which reside in us! During any full moon phase you will begin to notice changes in the behavior of the ocean. If you go down to the beach you should notice that the waves roll in much higher during a full moon than any other moon phase.just as our emotions tend to do too!

NOTE: If you pay close enough attention, you will notice a stir of emotions rising up within you, sometimes things may rise up that may startle you like unexpected emotions that you suddenly experience as if out of the blue.

We are all made up of approximately 70% water therefore, the Moon’s magickal force is affecting us the same way if affects the vast oceans, rivers and lakes. A Full Moon is a gifted moment where we can use this energy which is being stirred up inside us and acknowledge whatever it is that may rise up. Now is the time to own your emotions! Master your feelings. Control the power that you have inside of you. Allow the Full Moon to light and guide your way. Remember to be aware of what is happening and acknowledge this but try also not to be reactive. Embrace whatever may emerge from within.

TIP: Try to be as aware as you can about your behavior and nay patterns you notice. Make a note of this. Stop yourself from slipping into unconscious behavioral and thought patterns.
