A SPECIAL FULL MOON!

Its time for the Super Flower Blood Moon lunar eclipse. Lunar eclipses are more commonly known as blood moons which is also a supermoon. When a moon is a “supermoon” it means the moon looks bigger and brighter than usual. On Sunday (May 15, 2022), the moon will pass into the deep shadow of the Earth which will be visible across the Americas, Antarctica, Europe, Africa and the East Pacific. The Flower Moon will be totally eclipsed and will look red! This will be the first total lunar eclipse of 2022, how exciting! This eclipse is the third in an “almost tetrad” which is a series of four big lunar eclipses in two years.

When can I see this Flower Moon lunar eclipse?

The Flower Moon total lunar eclipse will occur in the late night hours of May 15 going into May 16. It will be visible for all stargazers in most of North America, all of South America, Western Africa, and parts of Western Europe, the Pacific Northwest into British Columbia, as well as in southern Alaska, where a partial lunar eclipse will seen.

WHY IS IT CALLED THE FLOWER MOON?

The flower moon is named after the flowers that blossom this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere. This lunar event in May marks the end of winter’s frost, which allows farmers to plant their seeds. The Full Moon in May is most commonly known as the Flower Moon.

Other names this Full Moon of May is known by: Hare Moon, Planting Moon, Milk Moon, Merry Moon, Bright Moon, Pestilent Moon, Budding Moon, Egg Laying Moon, Frog Moon, Leaf Budding Moon, Moon of Shedding Ponnies.

The Anglo-Saxon name for May’s brightest Moon phase is Milk Moon from the Old English Rimilcemona. It means three-milkings-month in modern English because cows were milked three times a day during this time of year. The Celtic and Old English names are Mothers’ Moon, Bright Moon, Hare Moon, and Grass Moon. Many wildflowers bloom in May in the Northern Hemisphere, where these traditional Full Moon names originated.

THE MOON GODDESS OF MAY

The greek goddess Maia is the most important of the seven sisters (the pleiades). She is the one who the month of May is named after. She is believed to be the Mother of Hermes. The Romans called her goddess Maius, the goddess of summer, purification and protection of farmland.

NOTE: In the Celtic culture, May (written Mai or Maj) was considered a month of sexual freedom, where green was worn throughout the month to Honor the Earth Mother. This is why we celebrate Beltane on the 1st of May!

CORRESPONDENCES for the Month of the FULL FLOWER MOON:

This time is a great time to either make a dedicated sacred space to perform your rituals or, to just update your altar. Herbs to include on your altar or in your rituals would include: mugwort, rose, mint, thyme, and yarrow. You should focus on the colors: pink, green and brown. The best choice of flowers to use are: Roses, lily of the valley , foxglove and broom. I like to use non scented candles, but if you would like to use scents focus on rose and sandlewood which are wonderful at this time. You can use stones such as: amber, emerald, malachite and carnelian. The flow of power right now is of creation, propagation and intuition flowing from all greenery and trees around. It is a good time to make contact with supernatural beings (especially faeries and elves). Use this moment to really strengthen your connection with the supernatural beings and protectors that surround us.

NOTE: May 16th is the Indian celebratory day for honouring Sarasvati (Queen of Heaven)

FLOWER MOON RITUALS – Ideas for you to try!

In ancient China they called this Full Moon the Pestilent Moon as it was believed by them to be a time where you are going to be invaded by demons and other supernatural troublemakers. A good way to get rid of anything that will attract these entities it to clean, declutter and purify yourself and your environment.

We all know too well that our own personal space can get very cluttered. As practicing WItches, it is very important for you to do a repeating, frequent cleaning, cleansing and purification ritual. Doing this will allow you to “clear out” things you you do not need to hold on to an longer, and which will serve you best to let go (emotions, friendships, relationships etc.) things that should have been allowed to end and cease allowing you to move forward and progress.

This is also a great time to recycle your clothes. Anything you haven’t worn in the past 18 months you might want to consider donating to a charity, neighbour or friend. This doesn’t just include clothes, this includes anything you have that you no longer need or use (kitchen utensils, gardening tools, etc.).

Remember, when you clear out you need to refill the vacuum. A good way to do this is to do a prosperity ritual. The following ritual is a good option as it covers, cleansing, purification and helps if you are feeling underattack (from others, energies or life in general), it with strength your psychicshield around your body and aura.

By the power of the rising Sun,

By the power of the noonday blast,

All control is mine at last

TURN TO THE NORTH AND SAY:

By the Full Moon in the blackened sky,

I am not alone, My help is nigh.

The Goddess’s hands around me stay,

To keep me safe by night and day.

Begone, foul spirits, unbidden here!

I send you out, I do not fear,

For I have won, I am set free!

You have no further power over me.

STEP 11: Take the vial with the oil and put a drop on your index finger to anoint your forehead, hear, solar plexus, wrists, tops of feet – visualize a shining bule suit of amor slowly descending over your body until you are completely protected.

STEP 12: Cap the vial and place is a safe place.

STEP 13: Thank the Goddess for Her help and snuff out the candles with a candle snuffer.

NOTE: Apply the oil and say the chorus whenever you feel the armor is slipping!

THINGS NOT TO DO ON A FULL MOON

As you learn to work with the energies of the Moon and nature, sometimes it is a good idea to postpone and wait to take care of cetain task, some of those tasks include the following:

  • Avoid surgies on a full moon as wounds bleed more and so it makes having surgies around this time more risky
  • Avoid making a dentist appointment during the full moon phase as recovery will be slower
  • Avoid waxing during a full moon phase
