Fear Street Part Three: 1666 REVIEW

Fear Street Part Three: 1666 – REVIEW

The final movie of the three part trilogy of Fear Street, and let me tell you, it doesn’t disappoint. This was definitely my favourite movie out of the three, let me tell you why.

Firstly, this movie is set in 1666. The actors are talking in an authentic 1600’s way so do be prepared to have to pay a little extra attention to what is said. Throughout this trilogy, these young actors and actresses have put on a brilliant performance, and are a very talented group. It takes a lot to keep my attention in a movie. I would say I can be a pretty tough critic at times. I wasn’t expecting an American teen horror movie to keep my attention let alone my interest for a whole three movies!

Fear Street Part 3: 1666 is centered through a vision of one of the main characters Deena (played by Kiana Madeira) has after she reunites Sarah Fier’s hand (the Witch) to her skeleton body. In her vision, Deena IS Sarah Fier and gets to experience exactly what happened leading up to the curse and why everything had happen (all through the eyes and perspective of Sarah Fier). Throughout this movie they flash back and forth showing Sarah Fier’s face (played by Elizabeth Scopel) as Deena’s face just to remind you as a viewer; I quite liked this as it was great to finally be able to put a face to Sarah Fier the Witch.

Sarah lived with her Dad, George (played by Randy Havens) and brother, Henry (played by Benjamin Flores Jr.) in Union (later to be known as Shadyside and Sunnyvale after the land was divided up). There is a lesbian love story that runs through this movie which I feel actually adds depth to the overall storyline. Sarah is in love with Hannah (played by Olivia Scott Welch) who is the daughter of the Community’s Paster Cyrus Miller (played by Michael Chandler).

During a harvest celebration, the young teens of the town plan a party, Sarah, Hannah and Lizzie (played by Julia Rehwald) while heading to the party, decide to sneak into the tent of the creepy looking, recluse widow who lives exclusively in the woods; I guess they were looking for something good to take with them to the party (I’m guessing to get a natural high!). They stumble across what looks like a Book of Shadows containing what looks like witchcraft spells etc. They get caught (of course) and make a run for it to join the others at the party. There’s definitely a seriously strong vibe between Sarah and Hannah as they dance beside the fire, flirting, having a good time. I feel like the directors do a very good job of portraying this blossoming love between the two girls. Then Caleb (played by Jeremy Ford) upsets the two girls by harassing Hannah in a very uncomfortable and forceful manner. Sarah comes to her defense and really embarrasses Caleb who runs off but this event is to come back on the girls later. Hannah & Sarah run off into the woods and end up getting it on, unknowingly, as someone spies on them, hiding behind some trees (it’s very creepy)! They freak out, go home and call it a night unaware that there are to be some serious consequences …

The next day is when things really start to take a more sinister turn in the unfolding plot. Hannah’s Dad (the Pastor) is acting very strange and not himself. I liked how the directors used flies as a sign of evil or possession through the trilogy, it’s a nice touch I think. Hannah is left blaming herself and thinks it’s her fault and that she has brought a curse on her home because she is in love with Sarah (this is forbiddan and seen as a sin in her Christian family). The pair soon realize that some kind of “curse” or “misfortune” has struck the whole town, food is rotten, animals are acting weird, people are acting weird then something horrible happens, it’s the Pastor! This movie has great surprises and twist that you were not quiet expecting.

Sarah, with nowhere else to go, turns to her friend Solomon Goode (played by Ashley Zuckerman) and confides in him that she fears she may be responsible … they hear screams and run to be faced with the unthinkable! The next scene is a pretty shocking scene so be prepared when you watch the movie, you’ll be asking “what is going on?” this movie definitely keeps your eyes glued to the tv and eager to find out what is causing all this evil and misfortune.

A scared, upset and angry the town call a community meeting. This is where the movie delves more into witches and witchcraft. It really reminded me of the awful crimes that actually did happen many centuries ago during the witch hunts and burnings. Awful times. The way this movie was directed, and how the characters talk in their accusing manner etc., you can really imagine what it might have been like for a Witch accused of witchcraft and how people would have reacted. Very good and creative visual.

The witch hunt starts. Remember Caleb, the guy that was harassing Sarah and Hannah at the party. What he says is exactly what I imagined happened to numerous women (and men) during the real witch-hunts. He is the one that calls the girls “Witches!” for the first time … now there is no going back for Sarah & Hannah.

The two girls go on the run but one gets captured. From this point on it is very fast paced and exciting. Sarah decides to go get the recluse widow’s book of shadows, to really be a Witch, after all, if she is to be accused why not play the part for real. She plans on making a deal with the devil for real. But, she arrives at the widows house only to be met with a horrifying surprise that then leads her to unraveling of the real truth behind Shadyside’s curse and what/who is really behind it all.

I’m not going to spoil it for you as this story line is very juicy, especially if your into witchcraft. I am however, going to highly recommend that you watch this movie, Fear Street from start to finish, with your preferred drink of choice, popcorn/snacks and get yourself ready for a thrill, you are not going to be disappointed. Overall very entertaining.
